Holidays 2022

This year we spent Christmas with my parents in Upstate NY. It was Chris’s first time spending the holidays there and it was so much fun to introduce him to our family traditions. We had pierogi and mushroom soup on Christmas Eve while listening to Ukrainian carols, and I wore a vyshyvanka as a nod to our heritage. On Christmas morning, Chris got to experience how long it takes Dunscombes to open gifts; it involves a lot of conversation, coffee and cookie breaks, and wandering away to see what the neighborhood cats on the back porch are up to. My mom also made a french toast casserole for breakfast, and an amazing feast for dinner.

I’m also including a photo of a metanka from my Aunt Mary. These are traditional Ukrainian dolls represent family connection and good fortune, and they have been around for millenia! Here she is next to some of my collection of pysanky.
