Honeymoon at Wings Neck Lighthouse

In November, Chris and I had our honeymoon at Wings Neck Lighthouse on Cape Cod. Decommissioned at the end of WWII, it is still owned by the descendants of one of the former lighthouse keepers and they offer short-term rentals of the property.

The first night there were gale winds that sent the ocean crashing up the rocky edges of the property. From the bedroom window that night, we could see sea spray and white capped swells bathed in the eery green light of the radar tower stationed in the yard. When we woke up, we ventured up the stairs of the lighthouse where the wind howled so loudly we had to shout to be heard. It was quite an experience being so high up right on the edge of the coast; since the lighthouse is surrounded by water on three sides, it felt like we were floating on top of a toothpick in the middle of the ocean!

Most mornings, we had breakfast at the local diner (Corner Cafe). For dinner, we had a celebratory meal at an Italian restaurant (Siena) in Mashpee, and made quick trips out for pizza and ice cream. Otherwise, we spent most of the time snacking, drinking hot drinks, exploring along the water, and sitting on a bench facing the horizon where we could watch the cormorants dive and ships pass. We even saw a seal pop out of the water at sunset one evening. When it was cold or rainy, we sat in the living room facing the water and read our books or played our favorite board game (Wingspan). I also finished a scrapbook of some memorabilia from our wedding. We caught every sunrise, including an incredible one that framed a flock of hundreds of cormorants flying from one side of the bay to the other.

My photos from the trip can be found here, but here are a few favorites.
